"Sancho Panza" by C. Paul Jennewein (1890-1978) "Don Quixote's bearded, paunchy companion, Sancho Panza, stands in a relaxed position, leaning against a patient donkey, his hat pushed back on his head. His left hand is on his hip, his right elbow rests upon a blanket covering the donkey's back, and one foot is crossed nonchalantly over the other. Sancho gestures with his right hand, a typical expression of the character. His leather jerkin is belted across his belly and woolen leggings slide down his calves toward feet shod in sandals. A saddle bag hangs on the donkey's right side. A small lizard on the ground next to the donkey's left front foot completes the group. This work was created as a result of a request by Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1968 to have a companion to her sculpture, 'Don Quixote', at Brookgreen Gardens. Jennewein studied literary references to the character of Sancho in order to capture the proper personality, and utilized the resources of The Hispanic Society of America in New York City in order to depict accurate period costume. He used himself as a model for the figure's stance and hand gesture. Anna Hyatt Huntington wrote to Jennewein, 'Thank you for sending the photograph of Sancho and his donkey. They are perfect and Sancho seems to be counting off time on his weary wait for his dreaming master. Please be sure your signature is prominent under this piece.' Since 'Don Quixote' had been cast in aluminum, a medium in which Anna Hyatt Huntington had pioneered, it was determined that Sancho Panza would be cast in aluminum, as well. The work was completed in 1971 and is unique." ("Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture Volume II, Robin R. Salmon, 1993, p.58-59) |
