Description |
"The Saint James Triad" by Richard McDermott Miller (1922-2004) A sculpture comprised of three over-life-size, nude female figures seated within polished bronze frames. Each piece is free-standing. The central figure (Figure A) leans into the inner side of the frame, her head also leans inward, gently resting. Her right hand rests on the frame next to her right leg; her left is crossed over her chest resting on the right side of the frame. The other two figures (Figures B and C), positioned to the either side of the central figure, lean with their backs against their inner frames, bodies facing one another. While these two figures are facing toward each other, they are looking in different directions. The figure on the left (Figure B) turns her head away with her arms up, hands resting on the top of the frame. The figure on the right (Figure C) rests her right hand on her right thigh, while her left arm hangs limply on her left side. All of the figures look relaxed and contemplative. The idea for this sculpture began in 1973 with a small sketch. Twenty-five years later, the over-life size sculpture was the subject of a book, "Voices in Bronze", describing its inspiration, creation and challenges. Miller placed the three figures within box-like frames to contrast soft curves with hard geometric lines, a device he had used in other works. The frames provide support and visual interest without confining the contemplative figures. The title comes from Saint James, New York, the hometown of the individual who commissioned the work. |
