Huntington was a pioneer in the use of aluminum as a sculpture medium, she studied with Henry Hudson Kitson (her first study) at Boston. She modeled domestic animals at Porto Bello, her brother's farm near Leonardtown, Maryland, and wild animals at the New York Zoological Park (Bronx Zoo). |

Anna Hyatt Huntington was the daughter of Alpheus Hyatt, eminent paleontologist of his time and a pupil of Louis Agassiz. Her older sister Harriet Hyatt Mayor was also a sculptor. Early roommates in New York City included sculptors Abastenia Eberle and Brenda Putnam. She married Archer Milton Huntington, one of the wealthiest men in America and a major patron of the arts, in 1923. Together they founded Brookgreen Gardens, among other museums. Nephew A. Hyatt Mayor, son of Harriet, was a writer and Curator of Prints at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. |

Some of the more uncommon include: a gold medal for distinction in sculpture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; a special medal of honor from the National Sculpture Society in recognition of her achievements as a sculptor and in appreciation of her unfailing interests in other sculptors; the Union de Mujeres Americanas designated her as "Woman of the Americas" in 1958; Who's Who of American Women included her name among the fourteen most prominent women of 1960; Syracuse University and the University of South Carolina have given her honorary degrees; In recognition of the 75th anniversary of the National Sculpture Society in 1968 the anniversary medal was struck in gold and presented to her; In 1985 she was inducted posthumously into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in honor of her outstanding career as a sculptor. |
