Atkins was among the first who turned to the American scene for sculptural subjects, finding his source of inspiration in the life of the American Indian. He drew upon Indian folklore for his dramatic subjects, treated in the colorful, slightly impressionistic manner, with warm surfaces, softly emerging planes, and pleasing variations of texture. |
