Richard Miller sculpted at a young age and studied at the Cleveland School of Art. Later, he operated his family's plaster casting business in New Philadelphia, Ohio until he was 40 years old when he finally decided to move to New York City and pursue a serious career as a sculptor. In the 1960s, at a time when the area south of Houston street was a meat packing and industrial district, Miller was nicknamed "The Figure Sculptor of SoHo" because of his prominent position as a figurative sculptor living in the southern part of Manhattan. Today his studio is still located in SoHo on Mercer St. |

Richard Miller's mother, Clela Miller, developed the idea of selling plaster of paris wall plaques. Her successful idea eventually evolved into a factory and family business. His wife, Gloria Bley (a writer) was the source of encouragement for Miller to make the big move from Ohio to Manhattan to pursue his sculpture. |
