One of a series of 33 sketches by Donald DeLue submitted to Brookgreen for consideration for use on the 1978-79 Brookgreen Gardens Medal: The Sculptor and His Work, bronze, Donald H. De Lue (1897-1988). There were 36 sketches originally; three have been sold over the years in Brookgreen fundraising auctions. Pencil on paper, framed. Vertical format. Large male nude with long hair flowing all around the head, facing forward, stretched out with arms bent and raised toward the head and legs pointing to the right, still attached to unfinished stone behind him. Behind him, a cloud and a large sun radiates from behind the figure with rays extending in all directions. In front of the nude, a simple frame. The sculptor stands to the right, continuing to work on his piece with hammer and chisel. |
