Description |
"Toy Venus" by John Gregory (1879-1958) Figure/female/mythology "Venus as a young girl, is kneeling on one knee on the back of a dolphin, one hand touching its upbent tail, the other resting on her knee, her head turned backward. A drapery falls over the knee and arm at each side of the figure, filling the empty spaces. The posture was no doubt suggested by an archaic Greek running Victory. The surfaces are smoothly modeled, the only decorative touches being the row of tight curls around the girl's forehead, the flat folds of drapery and the simple ribbing of the dolphin's tail and fin. The marble original was carved about 1922 for the garden of Mrs. Egerton Winthrop, Syosset, Long Island." ("Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture", Beatrice Gilman Proske, 1968). |
