Description |
"Gazelle" by Marshall Maynard Fredericks (1908-1998) "A sleek gazelle is captured in a characteristic movement called wheeling. It was adapted from the central figure of the Levi L. Barbour Memorial Fountain at Belle Isle, an island in the Detroit River. In 1936 his design won first prize in a national competition. The 'Gazelle' was one of four purchase prize winners of a nationwide open sculpture competition sponsored by Brookgreen Gardens in 1972. Brookgreen Gardens' American Achievement Award, designed by Fredericks in 1986, utilizes the gazelle theme as does Brookgreen Gardens' Membership Medal issued in 1977."
