Gertrude Lathrop's first exhibition was at the National Academy of Design in 1921. In 1924, she received honorable mention from the Art Institute of Chicago for "Nancy Lee", a study of a goat kid. The Anna Hyatt Huntington Prize of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors was awarded to another of her sculptures, "King Penguin", in 1933. The Speyer Prize of the National Academy of Design was awarded to her "Young Lamb" in 1936. In the following year, "Little Lamb" was also awarded the Crowninshield Prize at the Stockbridge Art Exhibition. Lathrop received a grant from the National Academy of Arts and Letters in 1943. In the same year, the National Institute of Arts and Letters elected her a member. (Proske, 1968). 1970: She received the Saltus Gold Medal for Merit from the National Academy of Design 1971: Meriden Arts and Crafts Association 1973: Gold Medal for excellence in medallic sculpture from the American Numismatic Association. 1974: she was awardede the Sharon Creative Arts Founders Prize and teh Allied Artists of AMerica presented her with the Gold Medal of Honor. 1976: silver emdal from the Kent Art Association 1977: six of her medal designs won the Mrs. Louis Bennet Prize at teh 44th annual exhibition of the National Sculpture Society in 1977. Gertrude Lathrop served on the board of trustees of Brookgreen Gradens from 1974 until 1980. |
